Homiletics 101

In Dr. Fong’s Homiletics Lab last night he pressed home the following point several times:

Effective preaching can NOT be accomplished apart from a life that is walking in the Spirit. Communication skills can be learned apart from a Spirit-controlled life but without the latter it is not likely to bring honor and glory to God. Therefore, it is vital that beyond classroom assignments, a student must, because of desire, be walking with the Lord. Be in the Word by choice. Practice a healthy prayer life in order that your efforts will be a reflection of your spiritual journey, not words recited as a performance. Let us walk together with Christ in the process of our learning to speak on His behalf. (his emphases)

After walking through this paragraph in the syllabus, he asked us to ask ourselves: “Can I be honest and sincere before Almighty God?”

This is a sobering and humbling thought. May all of my brethren everywhere contemplate this with us.

I try not to get too excited about a prof the first time I have him but I must admit that I did enjoy Dr. Fong’s class last night. I have not had him for a class before (he only teaches Homiletics), though his preaching in chapel has been a blessing to me. I appreciate that he was well-prepared and gracious in his presentation.
