Christopher Hitchens on Rick Warren: a "tree-shaking huckster and publicity seeker"

Read Christopher Hitchens’ take on Obama’s choice of Rick Warren to offer prayer at his inauguration. (Yes, this Mr. Hitchens is he of the God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything notoriety.)

Though I do not agree with Mr. Hitchens that Rick Warren’s standards are “low and vulgar” in this respect, I must note that his picture of Rick Warren as a “tree-shaking huckster and publicity seeker” will resonate with many of my brethren (make the call yourself as to whether it’s true or not). Then again, Rick Warren could be talking about eating Cheetos and Mr. Hitchens would probably find something wrong with that.

Anyway, here’s the full quote from Hitchens’ conclusion:

But if we must have an officiating priest, let it be some dignified old hypocrite with no factional allegiance and not a tree-shaking huckster and publicity seeker who believes that millions of his fellow citizens are hellbound because they do not meet his own low and vulgar standards.
